Another student highlighted the different views that we had on each page. A student mentioned how the sad parts of the book had darker illustrations and the happy parts of the story were bright. My first-grade students thought it was a great book.

The first thought that comes to mind for me is the dark. Students are able to relate this text to themselves and things that they may have overcome. It could start a great social-emotional discussion. I would suggest this book for a read-aloud for grades Kindergarten to third. The words are meant to be his emotions and feelings that separate him from the wall and overcoming his fears.
Another example of the exemplar text placement, when Humpty Dumpty is walking past the wall he is illustrated across the street and the words are right in the middle of the road. It guides your eye to see everything in the illustrations which match the words. For example, there’s one illustration of a loft bed and there is text on the top of the bed and then text on the floor. There is some repetition, making it a book that a young reader could access easily. The majority of the sentences are short and use words that a typical first or second grader could read independently. Humpty Dumpty becomes a real person with feelings and emotions and even problems that he needs to face. Dan Santat did an outstanding job of emdodying and maybe even enhancing this original story’s integrity. Typically, a fractured fairytale has a cool twist and is changed to be humorous and entertaining, but After the Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again is a little more meaning. Humpty Dumpty is a very popular fairytale and that is what makes this book perfect to fit into the new American Genre called, “Fractured Fairy tales”. The illustrations used a select variety of colors that weren’t too bright and not too dull. The illustrations show the omniscient perspective in addition to a view from the bottom of the wall, the wall’s point of view and a few more viewpoints. The read aloud text tells how Humpty Dumpty is afraid of heights after his fall and how he eventually overcomes his fears. This fiction book has one main character, Humpty Dumpty.
